Bush lauds 'pace of Iraq progress'

"George Bush, the US president, has defended the pace of progress in Iraq and criticised calls for a withdrawal of US troops as making "no sense".

"Political and economic changes [are] taking place, from major pieces of legislation being passed to simple signs of normalcy. This progress isn't glamourous, but it is important," he said.

Speaking in Ohio on Thursday, Bush also praised Nuri al-Maliki, the Iraqi prime minister, for his crackdown on "lawless gangs" in Basra."
