get those 5 gal seal able drywall mud buckets and fill a couple with rice, flour corn meal .... then rotate out and use ....... but it should be treated 1st or you may find your stash eaten by bugs ........

ever lever a box of flour ( aka bisquick or cake mix for a yr only to find the sealed box eaten from the inside out ......... )

we bought 12 55Gal soda Syrup drums from Pepsi up on 295 in Cheverly MD prior to Y2K for $ 15 bucks each .......... can be plumbed in line with the water system, once cleaned, with a pressure reducing valve .... and piped to a toilet to keep the water fresh ... ... then a 12 volt pump can get the water back out in a grid down scenario ..........

the above only works well if you have a basement and piping is exposed ....

oh and don't got mouthing off to your neighbors what you have stored up ... as the ANTS will come take it away .........

so when you go shopping @ a Larger BOX Store .... pick a few extras here and there .......... if you buy thing s that already have water .... you can save the drinking water for survival ....

.... and you need @ least 5 gal per person per day ..... that does not include bathing and potty

canned good are ok for a couple days ........... and not to sound sexist, but learn to Cook without pre cooked prepared stuff ..... cooking from scratch not hamburger helper .........

this Girl was great:

You're Kidding, Right?!

I wonder if you've been watching too many movies - or have 'grasshopper' tendencies?

I consider myself a 'survivalist', and am part of a larger network of good folks who have the same beliefs as I.

I believe in being prepared for any situation as much as I can be. I feel that I need to care for myself and those who depend on me - rather than waiting around for someone else to come along and do it for me.

I enjoy learning how to 'do' things for myself - now, so that if those skills are ever needed, I will already have them. I can garden, have family that know how to hunt and process meat, know how to sew, make butter, and so forth.

Last winter when we had a major ice storm, we were able to stay in our own home with alternate heat sources, cook, have light to see by - while many of our neighbors went to the local shelter.

People like myself are all around you, but you don't know it, because you have this picture of 'angry men guarding canned goods'. I'm female, by the way.

But let me add this - don't expect to come to my house to take long term shelter if things go bad. I don't do all this for you and all those who refuse to prepare themselves. I do it for those I love. Everyone else needs to do the same - if you chose not to, that's not my problem.

and then there was this window licker:

Don't do that, Tom,

we need you! Let none of us flinch in the face of evil.

One of the ironies in this persistence of survivalism -- and perhaps a surge in it -- is that it is founded on an extreme, misguided application of certain attitudes and behaviors which have historically been praised as heroic and virtuous.

Chickens deserve our true friendship! So do fish! So do other sentient beings! Let us learn to be kind.

Those buckets are not food grade plastic, so I would be wary of storing food in them (supposidly chemicals can leach from the plastic). If you want to store food in buckets so that the critters can't get to them, you need to order food grade buckets with the gasketed lid. You are also correct about larvae hatching in grains and eating them. So either you would have to store the food in mylar bags with oxygen adsorbers in them or dry ice in the bucket before sealing (to remove oxygen and kill any critters).

Those 55 gallon drums, are they just regular metal drums that look like oil drums? I'm looking for something to collect rain water from the roof in to water my garden and orchard.

I'm going to wait for John McCain to save me. The field next to my house is big enough for a helicopter to land. I sure do hope he's our next president.
