THAT is an EXCELLENT idea. I've tried to think of ways to evacuate or replace the air, but never thought of that. CO2 is heavier, sinks, replaces all the air, then just cap. As long as everything is dry. CO2 will join with water to create carbonic acid....

Many, many, many many years ago, just before one of the local hurricanes, I bought about 30 1-gallon water jugs and put them in the basement. A couple of weeks ago I had to move them, only to discover that some were rather light. The plastic in a few of them had degraded and ruptured, leaking all over the place. Note to Self: replace water jugs a bit more often.

Don't speak so fast there. The East Coast is dead-on target for the big one. It's been 70 years for New York.

But, the NHC says we'll have a ton of hurricanes this year, so it'll probably be another season.

Besides, anyone from Florida knows, if it's not a Category 3 storm or worse, it just ain't worth wakin' up for.

You are also correct about larvae hatching in grains and eating them. So either you would have to store the food in mylar bags with oxygen adsorbers in them or dry ice in the bucket before sealing (to remove oxygen and kill any critters).

Those 55 gallon drums, are they just regular metal drums that look like oil drums? I'm looking for something to collect rain water from the roof in to water my garden and orchard.

HDPE ? Plastic Drums .... while I would not worry too much about Gypsum and water in Drywall Mud Buckets you are right .... I forgot the dry ice trick ... you could always bag the grains in Ziplock bags ..... but no the DW buckets while water tight do not have a gasket ....

I've lived through a Katrina like disaster before, we just didn't have the rioting and the looting. YouTube - Rowlesburg WV Potomac Cheat River Flood Tom Brokaw Nov 1985

I've got the logistics down. I just keep procrastinating.

Also you sexist, I think I can manage cooking. I can cook just about anything, anywhere. Kerosene heaters make for handy cooktops.

If I ever get bored with my life, I want to build one of these in my back yard.

EarthshipIndex

I'm not even remotely a granola, but I've always wanted a self sustaining crib. Unfortunately, I'm addicted to my television, so that doesn't leave me much time to start construction. BUT, I do have a general idea how it is done so when the need warrants, I can throw one together.

I'm currently living on the gulf coast of Florida and was told to get my hurricane box ready. I'm living in my travel trailer so I guess I'll just have to leave it (I wanna new one anyway) but all my important papers, pictures, valuables, laptop I'd have to pack up. I was here last fall but thank the good lord they didn't have any and I didn't have to leave. We even have to sign in at the local police station to get a pass with our address on it to be able to come back to our trailers if a hurricane does devastate the area.
