Are you Ready for a Katrina Type Disaster

Quote:
A survivalist is a person who anticipates a potential disruption in the continuity of local, regional or worldwide society, and takes steps to survive in the resulting unpredictable situation. Some survivalists take an interest in survival in the wilderness or at sea, while others look for opportunities to gain practice and training by assisting in government volunteer organizations. Still others look at historical incidents, either localized or affecting large regions, and put extra effort and funds into preparing themselves with all the tools and information needed to handle repeats of those same events.

The way in which survivalists prepare for some future loss while maintaining access to society is said to differentiate them from other people who endure extreme situations, such as those who live in very remote or isolated locations, commandos and guerrillas, and subsistence farmers.

The specific preparations made by survivalists depend on the nature of the anticipated disruption, some of the most commonly anticipated being:

1. Natural disasters, such as tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, blizzards, and severe thunderstorms
2. A disaster brought about by the activities of humankind: chemical spills, release of radioactive materials, war.
3. General collapse of civilization, resulting from the unavailability of electricity, fuel, food, water, and other goods and services. For this reason concern over the Y2K computer bug led to a brief widespread interest in survivalism in 1999.
4. Widespread descent into chaos, or some other apocalyptic event.

Today's news was all about the worsening food shortages Thai rice hits new record, feeding food fears - Forbes.com, especially with rice wheat and beans. Take that along with the increasing fuel costs, which in turn increase the costs of all the other commodities, it gives you pause to wonder if stocking up on the basics like food might not be such a bad idea.

Oh Lawd

THE PPL IN ST. MARY'S CAN'T DRIVE IN THE RAIN OR SMALL AMOUNTS OF SNOW. SHOOT THEY SHUT THE COUNTY DOWN FOR LIGHT SNOW DUSTINGS. IF THERE WAS A MAJOR DISASTER LIKE KATRINA IT MAY TURN INTO A STAMPEDE OF SMURFS RUNNING UP 235 TO GET OUT...WOW...PLEASE SPARE ME OF THAT IMAGE.

I'd rather be ready than not. Canned food doesn't really go bad in the short term.

We got enough cats in the neighborhood to provide fresh meat.

Ok...

...folks, let's calm down.

If you live in a city, like LA or SF or NoLa, that is a disaster waiting to happen. it's one thing. If you live in a place like SOMD that, if it suffers a catastrophic event, can NOT be isolated in the ways that a New Orleans would as it would die to flooding or a West coast city that could be isolated due to massive road problems.

SOMD is readily accessible from multiple roadways, it will not flood all that bad and it is readily accessible by water from nearby major cities. Anything bad enough to hurt SOMD and not wipe out everything else can be over come in a couple of days.

If we plan emergency response based on every event being a NoLa we'll have bigger problems; we'll be broke.

:fixed:

Hysteria pisses me off and makes me grouchy. If the big one hits, I'm staying in my house except for when I run to WalMart for my big screen TV.

When I was a kid, we prepared for nuclear holocaust. This generation is a bunch of pikers if a little hurricane makes them uptight.

I think there can be a happy medium. I keep telling myself that one of these days I'm going to start storing away extra canned goods, batteries, and water. It's a good idea, it's a shame that I'm the queen of procrastination.

I'd like to get a lead brick too, see if I could get the neighborhood kids to lick it.

As we head into undeniably shaky economic and ecological times, I find the survivalist line of thinking crudely individualistic and repugnant -- the sort thing that actually could sink a fragile society.
maybe it would weed out the Chaff .... slough off some of the dead weight .....
