Thumbs up The man has a point

"NBC was not the first newschannel to report the death of Tim Russert. There is a reason. We wanted to be absolutely certain his family and friends were told first. Other news sources, sadly, did not take this into consideration."

They were playing back Brokaw's remarks when I was typing this. I can't multitask today.

Well, they can't blame FNC for doing it. I was watching Shepard Smith's show this afternoon and he was reading off the "wires" the AP reporting of the prisoners breaking out of jail in Khandahar, Afghanistan. I clicked over to Drudge & Free Republic to see about that story and it was from one of those sites that I got the link to the NYPost story. FNC did not report the story for a few more minutes after I read & then began posting the story here.

I saw Chris Wallace say they'd known about the news for (at least) a full hour before going on air with it - out of deference to NBC (so they could be the first network to broadcast the news on TV, is what Chris said) and, of course, respect for his family.

He didn't blame FOX.

I don't know exactly who broke the story, but Keef has a point. Absolutely disrespectful. It's a shame someone would've rather gotten the scoop than be considerate to his family and to NBC. Tim would've given others the respect that he was not shown today.

Matt Drudge is an ass so f he was the first to report it, and did "scoop" NBC and everyone else, it wouldn't surprise me. That's typical Matt Drudge. Just like when he ran that story about Prince William being in Iraq. No regard for anyone. There are things that people should sit on, should wait before reporting, out of simple respect.

I was listening to Hannity and he said he had sad news but would not divulge until it was at least triple confirmed. He eventually made the announcement at 1610 or so.

Get a grip. Once the news was out there, it's a little hard to prevent news from being reported elsewhere. How would anyone know if there was an agreement with the TV networks?

As I said, Chris Wallace said, specifically out of deference to NBC, [in order to give them the opportunity to contact Tim's family, who were flying home or about to fly home from Italy] the TV broadcast stations (cable, alphabets, etc) had agreed to this. I'm not sure he was talking about all media. That would be impossible to do. "SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" don't tell! From the sounds of it - there were a ton of people who knew about it - he collapsed right there in the office.

Nonetheless, Drudge didn't have his "siren" up, as he had heard the story and was reporting it - he had a story link. So did FreeRepublic - they had the same story, as I recall. The story I posted was from the NYPost online, but called the information "still developing". The story has since been updated.

Does Keith Oberhousmenadfaie4u or any other news agency wait to report the deaths of anyone? I doubt the next time a bridge collapes or building falls etc. etc. etc. That they will be waiting for confirmation that the family has been notified before they run the story. Please. It just happens that it's a news personality and they want to show some repsect for themselves. They don't have some serious moral offense to the process.

How often do they release the names of people killed in a bridge collapse immedaetly. They usually get the names from police departments - who tell family members first.

Normally, all they ever do is report the number of casualties. You righties just can't admit Olbermann has a point for once.
