| I agree... ...with the broader point; that we don't know our history very well as a people and that are letting things slip away. I do not agree with the broad implication that colonists rose up, en masse, as one body and overthrew their oppressor. Yes, many gave risked all for freedom and lost all. Some were absolute patriots of our imagination, give me liberty or give me death. However, many colonists we against revolution to the end and some even moved to Great Britain. Many were on the fence. Some joined the fight fairly early on. Some as things grew more desperate. Some decided to fight when the British left them no choice. Some switched later as the fortunes of war started to show possible victory. It has often been my contention that if we talked more frankly about how things work in real life rather than intellectually lazy oversimplification, we'd all be better served as citizens and as people. Those who were all in early on and stayed all in deserve the most respect and were indispensably critical in keeping our nation a possibility by hanging on through the darkest days. We only do them true justice by keeping in mind the realities of how and when choices are made by their fellow colonists.
