Report: 5 peacekeepers killed in Sudan attack

KHARTOUM, Sudan - Five peacekeepers from an African Union-United Nations force were killed and 17 others are missing after they were ambushed in Darfur, Sudan's official news agency said Wednesday.

The agency quoted an unidentified official from the joint force as saying the peacekeepers were attacked while on patrol Tuesday in northern Darfur. The report said 18 members were also wounded.

A spokeswoman for the joint AU/UN mission confirmed that one peacekeeper had been killed in an attack and said six were missing.

"One person has been confirmed dead from the U.N. police, around 19 people wounded, and at least three are in a critical condition," the spokeswoman told Reuters.
