I was looking around for more info. It appears it was on the lower span. Maybe the guy had some sort of medical issue. But I did read where the bridge apparently was 2-way at the time. I've always thought that was dangerous. Of course, for years, the eastbound span was the ONLY bridge.

My ex used to always crack the window whenever we went over any bridge so he would be able to open the door if we ever went over.

...it's dangerous. It's freaking crazy. They should have started on a third span by now so one at a time can be closed for maintenance.

I saw the story and video on NBC 4 this morning. Obviously the guard rails didn't, as this video shows. The only thing that the guardrail stopped was what looks like the front wheels, which are still on the bridge. The rest of the rig plunged into the water.

...the trailer wheels. They are movable, on a set of rails. The only thing holding them is how they over lap, a pin and weight. Makes it easier to turn in city driving.

Look how freaking narrow it is!

I'd love it if all the politicians who decided on such a narrow span had to face all the engineers they overrode who said it should be wider.

Thank you. Obviously I'm not a truck expert.

It's all about $$$. When they were talking about building the Thomas Johnson Bridge, there were plans to make it much wider but I believe the deciding factor was it would have cost too much. I'm sure the same thing was done for the Bay Bridge.

Anyone remember any other accidents where a vehicle went over the edge?? I can't recall any, but I could be wrong. I think the original span was opened in 1952.
