Because that's how it works, of course. They run a huge headline with some lie they made up, then issue a retraction buried somewhere. But the damage has already been done, and they know it.

CBS did this with the Bush AWOL papers and it cost a few people their jobs.

Exactly Vrai, I think these kind of attacks are calculated and they know that the stories are false or unsupported from the beginning, but are in such a frenzy to discredit Palin that they run it anyways knowing the damage it will do.
