Sixteen people were killed today in a carefully orchestated attack on the US embassy in Yemen in which Islamist gunmen were said to have posed as soldiers before using a car bomb attack to spring an ambush.
The dead included six attackers, six guards or soldiers and four civilians, including one Indian. No American personnel were killed in this attack.
Security officials in the Arab state said that at least five explosions rocked the embassy compound in the capital Sanaa, including at least one suicide car bomb attack against the front gate of the compound. The attackers then followed up with rockets and small arms fire.
A senior US official said that the deadly bombings appeared to be well planned with some of the attackers dressed in Yemeni army uniforms. Emergency personnel arriving on the scene were hit by heavy sniper fire from gunmen who had stationed themselves across the street.
