Well, DeNiro is awesome
but it does not work out for a large number of drop outs. At least it is fairly easy to get a GED nowadays, but getting a GED while holding a full time job is difficult (I think), because the classes (mandatory) are during the day I think. I didn't have to get one but I knew someone that did and this is how I recall it working...could be wrong.

Well you know what? Too damn bad. It is not even remotely a secret that dropping out of school is NOT a good thing but they do it anyway. If getting a GED or a diploma at night classes is hard they should have just done what they were supposed to do to begin with. Better yet go back and blame their parents and NOT the government.

And I am NOT interested in hearing about Sally who had to drop out because she had to take care of her 7 brothers and sisters because their dad ran off and mom died and they live in an Ford Econoline van down by the river when she really wants to be a world renowned mathematician because that shiat is pure Hollywood fiction.

The point here is if they are hell bent on dropping out, they do NOT want to be there, their parents don't care/can't control, some bureaucrat in DC making a policy decision is only going to screw 2 people, the school administration who now has to try to make water flow uphill and the kids in classes who really want to be there.

Minus the world renowned mathmetician and Econoline thing, both my grandmother and my GF's grandmother did this (though...now that I think about it...I am not sure if my grandma graduated highschool or not..but I know she had to take care of siblings after her mom died of cancer).

I think that a large number of you folks think that just because you don't see that something goes on in today's world, you think it doesn't exist. I know you can't be that naive because you have like...at least double the life experience I do...but that is at least how you present yourselves on here with some of your statements

I am not interested in what happened back in 1949 I am talking TODAY.

TODAY High schools have daycare centers right in them.

TODAY you can live in section 8 housing

TODAY you can get TANF

TODAY you can get WIC

TODAY a bus will pick you up at your front door.

TODAY they have improved hills that you don't have to walk "up" both ways, just one way.

TODAY there is no excuse what so ever that a child cannot get up, get on the buss at their door, be driven to school, eat a free breakfast, go to class, eat a free lunch, be dropped off at free daycare or at home by a bus.

I think that a large number of you young folks think that just because you see a movie about poor a disadvantaged kid not being able to go to school it really exists on a wide scale.
