Why not? I mean why should the government give a crap and put heat on states who then put heat on counties and schools when evidently there is a long line of people who just don't give a crap that their kids dropped out?

Why is this an issue at all?

Because

It's done because the parents aren't going to do it. It's done to lend a hand to kids in need. I agree with the comments but unfortunately an IQ test isn't required to have sex.

And the more the government takes over their job, the less parents will do it themselves.

Certainly you are old enough to be in the work force and know how this works?

My point is ..... so what? Will a diploma make them cheaper to support when they have out of wedlock kids and end up on TANF? Will a diploma cut down on WIC and Independence cards? Will a diploma prevent pregnancy? Will a diploma instantaneously make them want to go out and get a boring job?

The answer to all of those is pretty much "no". So why make it harder on the state, county, city school boards and administrators and why force kids who do NOT want to be there at all to stay and foul up the atmosphere for those who do?

Because kids, and people in general, make mistakes that they regret the rest of their lives. If the government helps at least SOME kids get a diploma that would have previously dropped out and regretted it later down the line, well then I'm ok with that

There is NOTHING barring people who dropped out of high school and regret it from going back and getting a diploma through adult education classes or a GED.

One thing is 100% certain to me, if someone is 25 or 55 and can't get a decent job because they dropped out and now want to get a diploma they are going to be 1,000% more interested and dedicated than some kid who is being held prisoner in a school until he can get his "completion certificate".
