I disagree with a lot of what BCP has to say about race - seems to be some unwarranted hatred there - but I'll agree with this. Everybody has the opportunity to succeed here, in one way or another.

Either get an education (and there's lots of scholarships available out there) or start climbing the ladder - flip burgers at McD's, do it really well, and the boss gives you a good recommendation when you attempt to get a better job. The process isn't rocket science.

It's intent and it's effect can be very different. Affirmative action is a handout based on race and thus by itself, racist. I'm a white male. The minute we stop distinguishing by color of the skin (black, white, yellow, red) we make a great leap forward. Whenever we use collor or race to differentiate, even if the intent is honorable, the end result simply furthers racism by the mere act of differentiating.

I am constantly astonished by how few people get that.

Dang straight. My wife and I are both full time students. Obviously, we live at home, hehe. Our home. We work full time also. I don't pay a dime out of pocket for school, neither does she. Pell grants and state grants cover our full tuition and books.

Anyone who claims they cannot afford an education is either lying, or has never tried, or is repeating what they've heard, or are too young to be 'independent' and mommy/daddy make enough money to put them through but won't.

Don't believe me? Check it out. USDOE. All the info right there. And, if you are a minority, you qualify for private scholarships that us white folk do not have access to.

There is no excuse for not pursuing higher ed.

I'm not sure what you are getting at. Affirmitive action is a handout. Is that what you want? To just be given a job because you are a minority? Is lack of pride a part of your culture? Lack of self sufficiency? If not, how can someone support affirmitive action? Note: Affirmitive action is NOT equal opportunity... I'm all for EEO and many people confuse the two.

If I were just handed a job over more qualified applicants solely because I was white I would walk away and never go back.

I have freinds from Denmark. On the surface they seem like a bunch of racist a-holes. Get to know them, and see how open they really are, and one learns the difference between non-PC and racist quick. Most non-racist folks I've ever met.

See that right there? nobody will say anything about it, but if I would have said I was black, and you would have referred to me as a KFC fried chicken eater, there would have been a boatload of posters just sitting around reading and waiting to be offended that would jump all over your racist ass.
