Saved by a heart attack

KEENE, N.H. -- It's a strange case: A man stabbing his wife suffered a fatal heart attack. She's expected to survive.

Authorities are trying to figure out whether he died while attacking his wife or afterward.

Bruce Maguire, 55, was found dead in his house Tuesday when police responded to a 911 call from his wife, Linda Maguire. She had reported a domestic disturbance with her husband.

Jeffery Strelzin, assistant attorney general, said Maguire had assaulted his wife with a knife and that she had suffered multiple, non-fatal stab wounds.

"He was found at one end of the house; she went out the other," Strelzin said. He said Linda Maguire was expected to spend at least one night at a hospital.

An autopsy found her husband died of a heart attack.

Strelzin said no criminal charges were expected. He said a knife was recovered from the house.

"The focus of the investigation is whether he suffered the heart attack while attacking his wife," Strelzin said.

He said he didn't know whether Linda Maguire was able to escape from her husband because he collapsed.

"I haven't heard the 911 tape yet," he said.

Don Smith, who has lived across the street from the Maguires for almost 10 years, said he'd never noticed anything out of the ordinary about the couple.

Smith said Linda Maguire works at Langdon Place, a Keene retirement home, and Bruce Maguire was a retired motorcycle mechanic who once rode for a factory racing team.

"They're an excellent couple," Smith said. "He'd be out trimming his hedges and we'd talk. He takes great pride in those hedges."

A neighbor, Dorothy Bragg, said she rarely saw the two together because Linda Maguire works "all the time," Bragg said. She'd never seen police cars called to the house before.

Why would anyone need to comment on the fact that there are not going to be charges? Does someone want to accuse the wife of causing the heart attack or are they going to charge the dead guy with assualt?

Who cares if the heart attack happened during or after the stabbing. Is it going to affect whether the wife gets charged with causing the heart attack?

It is required under department rules. I know, it sounds stupid. Especially when a single driver loses control of his vehicle, crashes in a tree and gets killed. Then, the next line reads, no charges have been filed. Kinda hard to charge somebody when they are dead.

ok, that's valid, but did the reported need to report it?

I would also bet that in the enlightened state of New Hampshire they are required to investigate BOTH spouses in the event they get a domestic violence call of any kind.
