"I didn't know it was illegal"

Congresswoman says she was unaware she couldn't give scholarships to relatives

WASHINGTON As a political rival called for a House ethics investigation, Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson, D-Texas, insisted Thursday she had no idea that the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation had rules against awarding college aid to her relatives.

"If I had known this was against the law I wouldn't have done it," she told WFAA-TV as she began trying to rebuild her image after days of scrutiny over $31,000 in scholarships she awarded in violation of nepotism and residency rules. "I did not have an ethical alarm go off."

GOP challenger Stephen Broden, who has accused Johnson of corruption, stepped up his pressure by demanding the release of records pertaining to the tainted scholarships. He also accused her of failing to publicize the scholarships in order to make it easier to award funds to relatives.

"I didn't have an ethical alarm go off."

This woman gave her relatives, and relatives of her staff thousands of dollars in scholarship money and she was so frikkin stupid that her ethical alarm didnt go off?

"If I had known this was against the law I wouldn't have done it,"

It's not against the law , it's against the rules of the CBC, There is a difference , but she doesn't have that figured out either.

"Trying to rebuild her image "
From a crook to an idiot?
