They broadcasted this on WUSA, all kinds of help came, picked up her 30000lbs of junk, took it to storage. THEN it came out that she HAS storage filled with more 'stuff'. Oh - and she was behind 3 months on rent.

Kat, are you part of some hoarder watchers' group or do you just happen to notice these stories more often?

No, I just post them when I find them. This one was interesting because I've always heard of hoarders being threatened with eviction, this is the first time I've seen it.

The idiot Graham in the 'queer-guy' spectacles asks that she identify those items that are important to her. As if that doesn't include everything on the curb.

That compelled me to watch the video. Funny thing is, the hoarding therapists will take that same approach. They will start going through things and, before tossing stuff in the trash, ask if it's okay to do so; a lot of times, the hoarder will be okay for a while, but eventually their compulsion gets the better and they want to keep everything they see. That's when they call it a day.

They do it out of respect, of course, but there is that obvious paradox.

It's not respect, it's smart. If you rish into their house and take all of their things, they will be depressed and anxious and thus fill up the house again, probably much faster...If you force them to make the choice they confront the anxiety of throwing belongings away (that's why the therapist asks them to "rate" their anxiety) and realize that once belongings are gone, bad things don't happen. Then they are more likely to ok more things in the future to be tossed, as they are desensitized to the anxiety. It seems nuts to gain permission for every little thing, but it is the way the process MUST work to be a success.
