| If you didn't pay for fire protection, ... the fire department won't help. This story raises some interesting issues. Firefighters watch as home burns to the ground | WPSD Local 6 - News, Sports, Weather - Paducah KY | Local

I usually view firefighters as heroes and all-around good-guys. Maybe that's why this article sickens me so much. That is straight-up bull####.

Does the fire department receive any funding from tax-payer money? If so I think the policy is highway robbery, if they are receiving tax money and the homeowners pay taxes then there shouldn't be an extra fee. If the sole funding for the fire department is the $75 from every household then I have to wonder why the Cranicks didn't bother to pay it (or attempt to pay it that is) until after their house caught fire. $75 a year doesn't seem like too much to pay for fire response. While $75/year doesn't seem like much to me there are people who are financially worse off than me so the fee might be a hardship, is there a waiver or something for people who absolutely cannot afford the $75 a year? Seems to be a tremendously crappy policy, to me at least.

| Well boo hoo. Didn't want to pay for the service, now are angry because the FD wouldn't make an exception for them. I don't feel sorry for these people. $75 a year is next to nothing, they knew about the fee, and chose not to pay it. Too bad.

| Welll..... It's not like they didn't know. If my community had a fire dept. and I was told to pay $75.00 per year or no response, I'd pay. It's not an exorbitant amount. Quote:

| Have you been to Tennessee? Parts of that state are very poor -$75 would mean having food on the table or having fire protection for some of those residents. I would take my chances and feed my kids first I believe. Just because $75 is nothing to you doesn't mean it is that way for everyone.....until you walk a mile in their shoes..... |
