I know, even after being proven wrong, they still try to defend their position. One guy said "well it didn't happen here but it happened there".

Because they have invested so much of their time, money, and entire way of life on these beliefs. It really is no different than a cult. When the fraud, theft, and lies are exposed, the true believers still cling to their beliefs.

How would you feel if you found out that your lifes work turned out to be wasted?

That's one thing, but what about the civilians? Normal people, who have no financial stake in these claims, yet believe it to their dying breath regardless of how many studies come out debunking it? It's fascinating.
