I'm like you; I just have a basic phone. It can text, but I rarely do that. I'm involved with technology all day long, and when I get home I try to avoid tech stuff.

The only reason I could see myself getting a smartphone would be to compliment the security system I'm getting. The security system can send an email with an attached picture to your phone and if you need to check further, log on to the security system and view live video feeds right from your smartphone. That's handy when you aren't home alot.

This can happen at a bookstore, or any other retail outlet as well as at this grocery store. Grocery shopping via smartphone on South Korean subways | Springwise

x2 on your first point.

I can see having the fancier model with video and all that when it is a functional tool for a real need or service....your security system being a great example, and I'm sure there are other examples like that.

I'm not so sure about that. RIMM (Research in Motion, the maker of Blackberry phones) saw a pop at the open yesterday after the news from Google, and went on to finish up about 10% for the day. The thinking being, some other handset makers might also be acquisition targets, and RIMM (along with Nokia) might be at the top of possible target lists. I'm a bit skeptical about that, but acknowledge that it's possible.

At any rate, RIMM stock is pretty cheap right now in terms of valuation. But, who know how well it will emerge from this new product line / ops system transition phase that it's going through. Its results have been pretty bad, but will they return close to previous levels? Or, will Blackberry fade into irrelevance?

RIMM has one advantage over other smartphone platforms - a general comfort level and established trust, when it comes to security, among enterprise users. Can it leverage that comfort and established trust to remain relevant (though not dominant) going forward and with new, more functional and competitive, products? I'm pretty curious to know the answer to that myself.

One thing's for sure, anyone who's held RIMM stock for a while has already seen it lose much of its value.

5 year RIMM.gif
