For this group — some descended from U.S. slaves, some immigrants with a separate history — "African-American" is not the sign of progress hailed when the term was popularized in the late 1980s. Instead, it's a misleading connection to a distant culture.

Because to acknowledge it is to report this devastating truth about him: Mr. Obama is not legally African-American. It is impossible for him to be, in truth, America's first African-American president.

Federal law requires that to claim a minority status, you must be at least 1/8 of the descriptor, but for the sake of this article, I've converted it to a decimal fraction for easier comprehension. You must be at least 12.5% of the racial component you claim for minority status. Mr. Obama, claiming to be African-American, is half the legal threshold.

Again, to let it sink in: Mr. Obama is not legally African-American. It is impossible for him to be, in truth, America's first African-American president.

It was reported and commented on and not by the KKK but, by all sorts of left leaning and black folks. Before he was elected.

Like a comic-book superhero, Obama is there to help, out of the sheer goodness of a heart we need not know or understand. I would imagine both of those are pretty doubtful considering most blacks identify themselves as more liberal or progressive, and that the terms black has been pretty well accepted.
In fact, the few actual black Africans I know always seem peeved by he AA term and don't like to be associated with it. On top on that I don't know that other than TV I have ever heard a black describe people from their group as AA. Also I have used the term black around blacks and it has never been an issue.

You're partially correct (for a change). The phrase of art is now "People or Person of Color."
