Everyone accounted for

The early morning news on WAVY news stated that everyone has been accounted for at the crash site and that no one else was injured other than the original 7 people already treated. No deaths. Amazing.

I don't recall, but did he die flying a plane in the movie? In real life he was very much alive and either lived around or near Beaufort. I only saw him that one time, but the doctor I saw that day said he was there quite a bit.

From what I gather, the real great Santini was every bit as abusive to his children as the guy in the book but I guess father and son must have mended fences because I had a friend in Savannah that has a Pat Conroy book signed by father and son. Pat signed it Pat Conroy. His father signed it Donald Conroy - The Great Santini.

Have you ever read any of his stuff? The Water is Wide is based on Pat Conroy's life when he was a teacher in South Carolina and that island and the children really did exist. The Lords of Discipline was based on Conroy's life when he attended the Citadel. Prince of Tides dealt with his brother's real life schizophrenia (sp?) and eventual suicide.

I'm babbling - I just love his books!
In the movie, he died flying the plane in to avoid it hitting a populated area -- that's why it popped into my mind. The Great Santini movie & book is one of the "major life-defining" movies in our family. We seem to mark life events with movies, lol. That one happened to be Pensacola. I did get a chance to see Beaufort finally a couple of years ago on a Charleston/Savannah trip. I saw the movie before I read the book. To this day, I will go out of my way to avoid hitting turtles on the road (as do my children).

I have read all of Conroy's books, currently working my way through the latest Charleston book. Loved the Water is Wide!

You should stick to politics, you know 10X more about that.

Strange, from the accident investigations that I have been involved in, the aim has always been to find the root cause so that it can be resolved and corrected.

However, if YOU were piloting, I am sure we could assume before you even lifted off what the cause of the crash would be. Then you would spend 50 pages explaining why it was the government's or the court's fault and that you were being persecuted because of your over qualification.

That is amazing. Kudos to the pilot for dumping the fuel, it may have been a lot worse if he hadn't.

Oh Good Grief...

I've fallen into the trap of trying to reason with someone that is unreasonable and explain something to someone that has no tolerance for any view other than his own. What the heii is wrong with me?

JPC needs to stay in the politics forums where he is an expert I have him on ignore, but he's quoted quite a bit, and as usual, looking more and more like an idiot.

Boy, never read many reports, have you? I can think of quite a few that blame the things other than the pilots. But some do, face it, pilots are human, and humans make mistakes. Ever had training in this area? Bet you a lot of us have, and know specific cases that go both ways.

I spent 9 years on aircrew and I have seen my share of really dumb pilots as well as brilliant ones that saved our butts. No matter how brilliant anyone in the cockpit is, some days you just fly yourself into a position that exceeds your talent at that particular moment. How many times have each of us done that in our own motor vehicles?
