FA-18 crash in Va Beach F-18 just crashed into an apartment complex in Va Beach near Birdneck Rd. Believe crew ejected. Two buildings afire. Va Beach EMS standing by for possible mass casualties. Will update as I hear info. VFA-106 aircraft. One crew possibly unccounted vfor. |
Wow |
Second crewman accounted for. Both crewman taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. No confirmed injuries on ground. Fires are under control but still burning. |
What a horrible decision To make punch out or stay and attempt to control the aircraft in order to prevent casualties on the ground. I assume that self preservation would win every time. |
It's hard to believe they hit apartment buildings and the fire is already under control..... My family isn't on facebook.... hope they are ok.... Navy does a good job down there avoiding this kind of thing.... I can only remember one or two incidents in the last 50 years.... :coffee: |

After I posted, I found THIS one too. Sorry. |
I was on I-264 and it happened right in front of me. I didn't see the actual aircraft when it went down, but I saw the first of the smoke bellowing up and two other F-18s starting to orbit the crash site. I got off on First Colonial which is the exit right before the crash site exit and it looked like everything in the area with sirens and lights was headed to the site. It his the Mayfair Muse apartments which they are saying on local TV is a seniors retirement apartment village. Looking at the TV there are at least 4 buildings that were hit and two of them are pretty much completely destroyed. It is a very densly populated area with many surrounding apartments. It is hard to believe looking at the helo views that the impact area and damage were so tightly contained to such a small area. |
