Flashback Video: ‘Absolutely Reject That’ — Obama, HHS Sec., & Budget Director All Say Mandate Not A Tax

In the Blaze’s short research we have uncovered three high profile, on-the-record declarations from the Administration strongly repudiating the notion of the Individual Mandate as a tax.

1. The White House Budget Director, Jeffrey Zients: “No.”

2. Health & Human Services Secretary Sebelius: “[The IndividualMandate] is not per-say a tax.”

3. The President: “I absolutely reject that notion [mandate is a tax].”

Please watch the now extraordinarily controversial comments:

dont worry about the, the next logical step is for the government to give us rations based on family size.

I cant wait, I hate shopping and trying to decide what I want.

Choosing a $695 penalty over health insurance? That's a choice, not a denial of liberty.
ROBERTS is the swing vote F##KING PRICELESS. Suck on that.

You might feel differently when your employer is able to decide - hmm, ten grand for your healthcare or a two thousand dollar tax penalty. And they can freely do that, because it won't be a violation of your rights or a crime to just drop your healthcare - because it's a tax.

How do they plan to legitimately call this a tax? They're not going to raise everyone's taxes by some set amount, and re-credit all those they track as having health insurance. It's not going to be on the tax forms. It's not the PPACA health care credit.

So how do they call it a tax, when they have not implemented an actual tax?

I mean, you can repeal a tax, right?

While many people (myself included) would very much dislike such a system as a matter of policy, there wouldn't have been much question that it was constitutional based on existing precedents and long-established taxing power doctrine. I doubt a challenge would have even been heard by the Supreme Court.

That's similar to what we do now with Medicare and Medicaid and Social Security. We collect taxes from some people and use them to provide services or benefits to (usually) other people. The average American taxpayer pays around $2,000 a year - that is, in addition to what they pay in Medicare taxes - in order to pay for Medicare beneficiaries' Parts B and D coverage. And yes, I do mean that we pay that in addition to what we pay in Medicare taxes. About half of Medicare benefits aren't, and weren't intended to be, paid for out of the Medicare tax. They're paid for out of the general fund.
