I know, right? I mean, a million here, a million there, and pretty soon, you're talking about some real money.

Democrats, especially for Minnesota, fear a military filled with redneck conservatives. Would much prefer a military filled with docile, nanny-state-fed liberals.

Are you more than likely going to recruit the type of person (of high school age) that watches NASCAR or Jersey Shore??

I think money better spent sponsoring the likes of NASCAR.. than running commercials during Jersey Shore.

BUT this isn't the first time.. Army, at one time, was a HUGE sponsor of the NHRA but when times got tough that was the first cut the Army took..
Gonna take the opposite line here. Why should the local, state, fed gov't sponsor anything? Why do they need to hire agencies to advertise the services they offer or the wonderful things they've done for their constituents? Why are gov't agencies allowed to "donate" tax dollars to causes of their choosing (Civista/CC commissioners comes to mind)?

On your other point, I do agree. Times change and so does the recruiting criteria. The services do have a sliding scale of acceptability standards, yet the pipeline does stay in use.

Define Sponsor...

If we buy ad time on NBC (or whoever is televising it) during the Olympics is the Army "sponsoring" NBC, or the Olympics?

Basically all the Army is doing is buying Ad time and placement on a car, and on the people in the pits..

NASCAR calls it sponsoring, but in reality it's moving billboard or AD space.

The proposed legislation was bipartisan, sponsored by a Democrat and a Republican. And the Republicans have control of the House, where all budget bills are originated. I don't agree with the decision and I don't agree with what the Democratic Congresswoman from Minnesota said, but the Republicans own at least 50% of this one.

For the record, the Army has renewed their NHRA sponsorship.

Well....to keep that in the perspective of where we started and from a limited reference source, (howstuffworks) w/ NASCAR; "That's right -- being a primary sponsor of a team costs $350,000 to $500,000 per race, although corporations can usually cut a deal to sponsor a team for a full season. That means the sponsor gets to choose the paint scheme of the car, put the logo all over it, and use the driver's likeness in advertising for the product or service they want to promote. It is possible to be the primary sponsor for just one race, and for your half a million-dollar investment, the car will change its appearance for just that one venue."
My objection was based more towards the gov't. spending on "commercial media type advertisement", which by the definition I would like to use does not include handouts/mailings but does include TV, radio, magazines, billboards (moving or stationary), etc.
