So with that thought, they are using the lower enlisteds dependents as captive customers? I had found by shopping sales on the outside I got by cheaper. Also couponing helped and I didn't have to pay a 5% surcharge and I didn't have to tip the baggers.

I think it probably also depends on where one is stationed, as the prices of food fluctuates country-wide. For me personally, i have found meats are much cheaper at the commissary and depending on sales, other "side items" be found cheaper off base. Also for some, it is a security blanket of sorts.

When/ if you don't have access to a car, most times you can walk or catch a ride to commissary or exchange to at least get your basic needs.

Combine MOS's. You have MOS's that can be combined. Infantry and Motor T. Air crew and Aviation Mechs. There are lots of MOS's that seem to overlap each other. Machine Gunner and humvee driver.

Cutting benefits from the military? They already don't get paid anything. Now you want to cut GI bill, educational incentives, and the lowered prices at the PX/BX? When I was in the military I was told that the lowered salary I was getting paid compared to my civilian counterparts was made up in compensation by the other benefits provided by the government. If the government takes away those benefits, are they going to give pay raises? What will be the incentive to serve instead of going to college? How will they attract good officers when once you have a degree you can go work somewhere else?

If they plan to cut the military do they plan to cut EBT and food stamps as well? If they cut military do they plan to cut some section 8 housing funds too? Maybe they should cut some TSA salaries. Those civil rights violators uniforms cost more than military uniforms. Overpaid. In a time and age where spending is being scrutinized, you would think they would be making cuts everywhere.

Military generally votes Republican, the leeches generally vote Dem. So why would they make direct cuts to their voting base, when they know they can make huge cuts to those who vote the other way.

If there is no school on base (like PAX) the govt pays a fairly large fee per student to the schools they do attend. Many reasons for it, like local schools don't budget for the flux of military kids, amongst other reasons (like military members don't pay local taxes in most cases).. If you have a fairly large base having your own schools actually saves considerable money.

I've been on bases as an adult and child that have had K-12 schools. Ft Knox (before it was'closed') for one.

Agree with what Bob says. Also I believe Dahlgren has a "Special Education" (short bus, no disrespect) program not available elsewhere. I've known military personal who were stationed in the DC region so that their special needs child could attend the school in Dahlgren.
