Bakers Union President: We Knew Hostess Could Die

Quote:
Bakers Union President Frank Hurt released a statement yesterday after Hostess closed all of its American plants.
Hurt said the union knew Hostess could die.
They went on strike anyway and today 18,000 more Americans are out of work.

At least he still has a job!

I find it tough to believe the union was realistic in assessment of the strike driving Hostess to liquidate. In some ways, its probably true the Bakers Union leadership knew Hostess could be forced to liquidate, but realistically they probably weighed the odds at like less than 1%. Why loss 18,000 jobs. I think both sides probably thought they would be a little bit better at brinkmanship which requires the parties to be able to be flexible at the critical moment, but neither side was able to.

That said while the union was the nail in Hostess coffin, perhaps the massive heart attack that killed Hostess, in reality the stage was set earlier through years of un-optimal management (in the heart attack analogy, twenty years of unhealthy eating and neglecting ones health, perhaps after two minor heart attacks--Hostess had declared non-liquidation bankruptcy twice before).

The teamsters had seen the books and urged the Baker's Union to accept what was offered. I don't know what the heck was going through the minds of the union's leaders but they tremendously underserved their membership.

What does the Bakers Union care anyhow? He still has HIS job.

Calling anyone at hostess a baker would be like calling a worker at Burger King or Olive Garden a Chef.

He might lose his job but I'll bet he won't lose his paycheck

He thought Hostess was bluffing, so he called. He may lose more, checkout what it costs to run his Union.

Bakers’ Union has 8 Vice Presidents and 2 Million in Executive Salaries

Do you really mean to compare these salary positions to executive pay? All of the positions mentioned don't add up to one executive salary. What's the point?
