| She is at very high risk of getting breast cancer so I see no problem with her making that choice. You guys need to keep in mind that even if you get smooshed religiously every year or even every six months you can still end up with breast cancer in between mamos. Why should she live with that constant fear and why should she leave herself at such a high risk of having to fight a battle her mother has already lost? She will get reconstruction surgery giving her boobs you can continue to drool over and she no longer will have to live in fear that she has developed the same disease that killed her mother.

| Good for her. If that is what will make her feel happy, safe and secure then say good bye to the girls. I honestly would probably decline the reconstruction surgery if I were in the same position. I have always been amply endowed and think that walking around topless and never seeing a bra or underwire again would be wonderful.

| I personally wouldn't have gone that route since she merely has a greater chance of developing breast cancer than someone without the gene (as opposed to a more definite chance) and because a mastectomy doesn't actually eliminate her chances of developing breast cancer but that's just my personal opinion. I don't think you could necessarily blame the girl for doing what she thinks is best for her life and body. She's about to embark on a pretty scary little journey. If this is a ploy to help further her career, it's kinda genius.

| Ignoring reasonable options other than self mutilation: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...nb0Dyw&cad=rja Your article provides a disappointing, unscientific response to the very important bra/cancer controversy. There was a study that came out of Harvard in 1991 showing bra-free women had a much lower rate of breast cancer. (Eur J Cancer. 1991;27(2):131-5). Then there was Dressed to Kill and the 1991-93 Bra and Breast Cancer Study by medical anthropologists Singer and Grismaijer. There are innumerable doctors now informing their patients to stop wearing tight bras, especially 24/7. And even the American Cancer Society is telling post-mastectomy women to avoid tight bras since they cause lymphedema. per Dr. Mercola Many physicians and researchers now agree that wearing a tight fitting bra can cut off lymph drainage, which can contribute to the development of breast cancer,[1] as your body will be less able to excrete all the toxins you’re exposed to on a daily basis. Aluminum from antiperspirants, for example, is one potentially dangerous source of toxins that can accumulate if your lymph drainage is impaired. Says Dr. Michael Schacter, M.D. in his article, The Prevention and Complementary Treatment of Breast Cancer[2]: "Over 85 percent of the lymph fluid flowing from the breast drains to the armpit lymph nodes. Most of the rest drains to the nodes along the breast bone. Bras and other external tight clothing can impede flow. The nature of the bra, the tightness, and the length of time worn, will all influence the degree of blockage of lymphatic drainage. Thus, wearing a bra might contribute to the development of breast cancer as a result of cutting off lymphatic drainage, so that toxic chemicals are trapped in the breast." Can Wearing Your Bra Cause Cancer? Others label the above as MYTHS and should be ignored. Usually by organizations that profit from the cancer industry and they don't want people to know how important lymphatic drainage is to the body. Of course let's not fund a double blind study to really find out, Oh, I just forgot, I have testicular cancer history in my family. Excuse me while I go look for the scissors! |

This is a simple matter of knowledge; knowing what she is facing and making an informed, intelligent decision.
