Freedom-to-Work

Well those Union are sure liked in Michigan. Wonder why they are doing this?

Michigan likely to go 'right-to-work,' protestors hit Capitol

.....

The leaders in the Legislature say they have the votes, and now they have Gov. Snyder's blessing as well.

Michigan likely to go 'right-to-work,' protestors hit Capitol | Michigan Radio

Now his hand is being forced to be out front championing the effort. In a press release, Snyder said:

"We respect the fact that the freedom-to-work issue evokes strong emotions among supporters and opponents. That's why we've focused on other reforms that are so critical to Michigan's turnaround. But with this issue now on the table, it's time to embrace the benefits that come with giving working men and women the freedom they deserve. The values of freedom, fairness and equality in the workplace should unite us all. And as states fiercely compete for jobs, this legislation will ensure that investors know Michigan is the place to do business."

Governor Snyder said yesterday that so-called "Right to Work" is "on the agenda for thoughtful discussion."

We need YOU to help lead these discussions.

Tell our legislators Michigan is NOT a Right to Work State.

We need your help tomorrow – Dec. 6, 2012

Volunteer tomorrow, Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012 as a Citizen Lobbyist or Event Marshal. Don't let overreaching Republicans attack collective bargaining in OUR state capitol.

Citizen Lobbyists will visit legislative offices to tell representatives and Senators to oppose so-called "Right-to-Work" legislation. Shifts for citizen lobbyists begin at 8 a.m., 9 a.m., 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Marshals will lead groups of 5 to 15 lobbyists around the capitol. Marshals should arrive at 7:30 a.m.

At 1 p.m., we will march together to the Chamber of Commerce to deliver a letter from Michigan's working families.

Click here to let us know we can count on you tomorrow.

Please arrive at the Michigan AFL-CIO prior to one of the listed launch times for training and materials.

I wonder if those lobbyists are registered?

Illinois governor: ‘Union jobs are the only way to go’

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn spoke to UAW delegates Tuesday. Photo by Rebecca Cook.

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn, one of the early speakers on the first day at the 2011 Special Convention on Collective Bargaining, came to town with a plan: to encourage UAW members to stay in the fight because what we do – as a union – matters.

“UAW workers know how to get the job done and do it right,” said Quinn, a Democrat.

Quinn won his election with a 30,000-vote margin, and he credits the UAW and other unions with helping him achieve that victory. The governor said this proves how critical a difference labor makes in elections.

“We were in the knife fight with the right wing, and every vote counted,” added Quinn.

And the governor has made a critical difference for labor, including working closely with the UAW to bring thousands of manufacturing jobs to Illinois through new products at Ford Motor Co.’s Chicago Assembly Plant, the Mitsubishi Motors Mfg. of America plant in Bloomington, the Navistar plant in Melrose Park and the Chrysler Belvedere Assembly Plant.

Not only did this mean middle-class jobs for UAW members in those plants, but also for thousands of other supporting jobs in communities around those plants.

“Union jobs are the only way to go,” said Quinn. “The great thing about members like all of you is that the UAW is a great union, a proud union, which has paved the way for all working people.”

Quinn has stood on the side of labor since the 1970s when he stood shoulder-to-shoulder with union members on the picket line during the Caterpillar Inc. strike.

“I’m proud to call Gov. Quinn a friend of labor,” said UAW Secretary-Treasurer Dennis Williams.

Known for introducing progressive legislative in 1976, he led the largest petition drive in state history, ending the century-old practice of allowing Illinois legislators to collect their entire salary on their first day in office.

Quinn was interested in bringing the voice of the people to the forefront of politics in his state long before he was elected governor of Illinois.

In the late 1970s, he led a petition drive to increase the power of public referendums in the political process and recalls for public officials, revealing his commitment to public approval and civic engagement – values he has continued to hold as he entered public office.

Since taking office as Illinois’ 41st governor in January 2009, he has organized grassroots petition drives signed by more than four million voters, walked across the state in support of health care for all, supported tax reform for working families, increased consumer protections and given Illinois residents a strong voice in government. As governor, he has focused on restoring ethics to state government.

He is and has been a staunch supporter of labor and has recently been outspoken on the dissolution of labor rights across the country under the guise of budget cuts by many ultra-conservative GOP governors.

“We are fighting for the middle class in America. The people that are too poor to be rich and too rich to be poor,” said Quinn. “Everyone deserves the right to organize and make sure that their voices are heard. Early to bed. Early to rise. Work like hell to organize

Unions Get Ugly As Michigan Now Set To Become 24th Right-to-Work State In Nation

As Moe noted earlier today (Thursday), the Michigan House passed a Right-to-Work law this afternoon. It was expected that the Michigan Senate would be taking up the legislation early next week.

However, a mere three and a half hours later, the Michigan Senate surprised everyone–especially unions–by following the lower chamber in passing Right-to-Work legislation as well:
The Michigan Senate passed their first bill by a 22-16 vote, with Democrats and a few Republicans voting against it. A separate bill approving right-to-work strictly for public-sector workers passed a few minutes afterward by a 22-4 vote. The chamber’s 12 Democrats walked off the floor in protest and were purposely absent for that vote. [Emphasis added.]
Contrary to the union spin machine, Michigan’s Right-To-Work law does nothing to impede collective bargaining. Rather, Right-to-Work prohibits unions from having workers fired from their jobs for refusing to pay union dues or agency fees.

Now, Michigan is but a signature away from becoming the nation’s 24th state to give workers the freedom to choose whether or not to pay a union as a condition of employment. Rick Snyder, Michigan’s governor stated earlier this week that he would support Right-to-Work legislation.

Predictably, as is typical when union money is threatened, unions went wild with anger at Michigan’s state house in Lansing.

scary ass chart of the week;

halfway down in the article Mich, is at the bottom in JOB Growth 1991 - 2011

I have a progressive friend that claims a "closed shop" doesn't force you to join a union because you don't have to work there

If unions are so great, why do they have to force people to join?
