Journal News Gun Map Leads To

Personal information about editors and writers at the paper has been posted online, including their home addresses and information about where their children attended school; some reporters have received notes saying they would be shot on the way to their cars; bloggers have encouraged people to steal credit card information of Journal News employees; and two packages containing white powder have been sent to the newsroom and a third to a reporter's home (all were tested by the police and proved to be harmless).

The shipping of the powder is over the top, as are the threats to their children.

I agree, but who knows more that there are crazies in the world that are just looking for a reason to do something over the top, than a journalist?

Although very very wrong, the threats and intimidation visited upon these journalists is nothing compared to the intimidation and dangers they put upon those they targeted by their unscrupulous publication of private information.

I have no sympathy for the hyena being attacked by the lions.

So whose fault is that? The ones that have released PUBLIC personal information or the ones making the threat? Does the media have any responsible on this. Based on the concept behind Dram Shop acts (legally serving a person a drink that later causes harm can hold the serving person/organization libel) , the media should be held accountable for any threatening or illegal act that has come from this.

Since prisoners are using the published information against guards and police, what is the difference? Common sense and responsibility! Newspaper crossed the line and started it.

Yes it is wrong to threaten anyone and the newspaper lacked good judgement on publishing gun owner information.

The media is anything but a victim in this mess that they created.

Ethically, they know they were wrong. Personally, I wouldn't be threatened by having my name published as a firearm owner. As criminals most likely will not visit my residence. I would hope that my unarmed neighbors would join the armed.

First, the names published included a lot of retired AND active law enforcement officers AND prison employees which may now be revenge targets. Second, the unarmed are now easy pickings.

Now that the paper has announced it will deliberately continue publishing even more names, they must be held accountable for ANY and ALL crimes committed where this list was consulted in the process of planning the crime.

Highly unlikely. If they didn't have arms before, they aren't going to get them just because of this announcement and your position.
