3rd person dies after Ky. college shooting | US National Headlines | Comcast

A gunman enraged by a domestic dispute bought a gun and fatally shot his former girlfriend and her uncle and severely wounded a 12-year-old girl in the parking lot of a small southeastern Kentucky college, police said Wednesday.

The violence near the school Tuesday afternoon locked down the campus for more than an hour as police searched the two buildings of Hazard Community and Technical College in Hazard. The campus was closed Wednesday and will reopen Thursday.

Hazard police Chief Minor Allen said Wednesday that Dalton Stidham, 21, was charged with two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.

Allen said the shooting resulted from a dispute between Stidham and the woman who was killed, 20-year-old Caitlin Cornett.

Allen identified the male victim as Caitlin Cornett's uncle, Jackie Cornett, 53, and the wounded girl as his daughter. She was in critical condition at noon Wednesday at Kentucky Children's Hospital, said Julie Phillips, a hospital spokeswoman. Allen said the girl was shot multiple times.

Allen said the gun believed to have been used Tuesday was purchased the same day at a local pawn shop. A semiautomatic pistol was found at the scene.
Why should my right to own new a firearm, at a moments notice, be violated because someone else makes the decision to murder? Background checks are limited (as they should be) in their effectiveness and they won't stop bad people, or bad events from happening.

Prayers for the family.

It would appear you care greatly for the emotion and feelings that the remaining family members are going through. A customary way of showing sympathy (from a stranger) is to send a card offering your condolences and/or support.

Calling for greater restrictions only shows your political leaning, coldness, thoughtlessness, and lack of empathy.

If he wasn't directly involved, wouldn't it be illegal to use executive privilege to shield the documents pertaining to the Fast and Furious operation?

First, let me say that I do NOT support the op's view on the second amendment. I believe in gun ownership and our right to have firearms.

I do think, however that this guy likely would not have inflicted the carnage that he did inflict had he not had immediate access to a firearm.

Having said that, I don't think you can prevent every tragedy from happening. People are going to kill other people for a myriad of different reasons and you can't legislate peoples lives.

Have swift and severe penalties for people who do these crimes and for people who commit acts of domestic violence. If your spouse calls the police on you and there is evidence of an assault, don't allow for a spousal privelege and prosecute those cases with mandatory minimum sentences.

Trying to rid society of guns is irresponsible, innefective and unecessary.
