Our So. Md. Leaders Speak on Gun Control

Here is the latest from our local elected "leaders" on Gun Control after Obama's made his announcement the other day -- seeking to capitalize on the recent school shooting tragedy to further their political agenda.

But first, my take to entertain you:

So, we have a mentally disturbed youth, who was known to be disturbed, and as I understand it on mind altering prescriptions. He takes guns from his mother's home (why they weren't locked in a safe when she knew she had a mentally disturbed child in the home, is something I can't answer) and commits atrocious cold-blooded murders at a local school where his now dead mother worked.

So, now the people who control the country use this tragedy to further their political agenda to take guns away from law abiding citizens, despite the constitutional mandate for citizen's to be allowed to maintain their own guns to protect from the country falling into a tyranny, from which the nation had just escaped at the hands of the lovely British empire.

Now, I wonder the following regarding this sick child who committed these murders:

-- What role did these mind altering medications play in his actions? After all, many of these drugs warn of depression and suicide as possible side effects.

-- How many hundreds of hours of simulated murder, torture, and rape did this child witness on TV and in movies produced by Fox, ABC, NBC, CBS, Viacom, Sony, and rest of their ilk?

-- How many hundreds of hours did this child immerse himself in commonly available violent video games where he played a first-person role as a cold blooded shooter and rapist?

-- How many hours of Shock & Awe did he witness in recent years as it was glorified by ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox, and the rest of their ilk.

Despite all of these potential factors that could, IMO, easily corrupt a young child's mind, especially one who had a mental illness and was also from a divorced home, our leaders tell us that it was the gun's fault. I'll spare you all of the analogies like we should ban cars because of a few drunk drivers, etc.

As with most political discourse in this country as of late, the debate is framed by those with the most power and reduced to most infantile level possible -- reinforced by the corporate media to ensure that an honest debate will never see the light of day -- especially when such a debate would possibly reduce the profits of powerful people.

And now, w/o further delay, as promised, the official statement from our local leaders on the matter:

Attorney General Doug Gansler Convenes Forum on Gun Violence

Local challenges, Maryland solutions to be the focus

Baltimore, MD (January 17, 2013) – Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler announced today that he will host a forum on gun violence in Maryland on Monday, February 4 at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law. A prosecutor at the federal, state and local levels for over two decades, Attorney General Gansler is convening state and local community leaders, law enforcement, prosecutors, legal scholars and experts for the event entitled, The Attorney General’s Forum on Gun Violence - A Conversation Among Law Enforcement and Community Leaders to Consider Practical Solutions.

“This is the right time to consider pragmatic, common-sense action to reduce gun violence and protect the safety of all Marylanders,” said Attorney General Gansler. “We will explore solutions to effectively keep illegal guns off the street and stop guns from getting into the hands of those who seek to kill or harm others.”

This week, Attorney General Gansler, currently serving as President of the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG), was joined by other attorneys general from across the nation in a discussion of gun violence with the Office of Vice President Joe Biden and White House officials. The forum on February 4 will be an extension of that conversation, seeking to identify and define the many legal, law enforcement and systematic changes that will save lives and prevent injury to Marylanders.

“There are important and welcome developments on gun violence already underway in Annapolis and Washington,” Attorney General Gansler added. “This event is intended to further that conversation as we continue to work with Governor O’Malley, members of the General Assembly, my colleagues in law enforcement, community leaders, and the people of Maryland to ensure that in 2013 our state makes progress on gun violence.”

Cardin Joins Call For Swift Congressional Action To Reduce Gun Violence

“We can protect our children while still protecting the rights of legitimate hunters and existing gun owners.”

Washington, DC – In response to President Obama’s announcement of his priorities to reduce gun violence, U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) released the following statement urging Congress to take up the necessary legislation.

“I agree with President Obama that we cannot wait for another tragedy to enact common sense, reasonable gun control measures, especially on weapons of war that have no legitimate civilian use. Congress should act swiftly on requiring universal background checks for firearms buyers. We must also take steps to strengthen our mental health system and reduce the glorification of violence in our culture. And we absolutely should move to ban assault weapons and prohibit high-capacity ammunition clips. I have long been a supporter of the assault weapons ban and I am proud to join Senator Feinstein in her effort to reinstate and strengthen the 1994 law. I will be an original co-sponsor of the Assault Weapons Regulatory Act of 2013, which she plans to introduce next week. Despite lobbying efforts to the contrary, we can protect our children while still protecting the Constitutional rights of legitimate hunters and existing gun owners.

“America has mourned far too many innocent victims of gun violence. Each heartbreaking event is shocking in its own right but also tears us apart wondering what could have been done to prevent it from happening. The senseless death of 20 students and 6 adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School needs to be a wakeup call for Congress. More than 900 Americans have died from gun violence since that day. The safety of our children cannot be put at risk because of partisan gridlock. We must seize this moment, set our political fears aside, and act responsibly.

Hoyer Statement on White House Proposals to Reduce Gun Violence

WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden announced their proposals to reduce gun violence:

“Today, President Obama and Vice President Biden outlined a series of steps to make our communities and children safer from gun violence. From a universal background check to a new ban on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, from new resources for law enforcement to new initiatives that help those with mental illness access the help they need, the President’s plan is a major step forward to address the epidemic of gun violence that has plagued our country in recent years.

“It is now Congress’s responsibility to work with the President to move forward with this plan, which is based on common-sense ideas supported by a majority of Americans and a majority of responsible gun owners. Only through a concerted plan of action can we prevent the kind of mass shootings like the ones in Aurora, Portland, and Newtown – and the thousands of smaller but no less horrifying incidents of gun violence that plague our communities each year. I look forward to working with my colleagues in Congress to bring legislation to the floor over the coming weeks to implement these proposals.”

If it wouldn't insult the "fellas", I call Gansler, Cardin & Hoyer the 3 stooges.

Just as reducing the size of soft drink cups from 32ozs to 16 ozs will NOT make people thinner, so gun control laws will NOT make us safer.

Also, it's not the politicians that are dangerous and should be removed, it's the liberal, low information voters that need to have their voting/breeding privileges removed.

Isn't it typical of the liberal to go after the inanimate objects instead of the humans that use them?

We're done for.

As a whole, we are screwed.

I've always said: If they ever come for my guns, they'll get the bullets first. I will not live as a defenseless prisioner to this liberal government...

Yea, ok...

I'm sure your family will be just fine when you end up full of holes in your front door.

Or if you're locked upf or life.

I admire your tenacity, but let's be honest here, you, nor anyone else outside of militia members of Wyoming will do anything when SWAT members show up at your door.

I'd be more interested to know what our local representatives in Annapolis think on the subject since is sounds like MOM's plan may be worse than anything that will get through Congress. Hey Roy, Johnny, John, and Tony... what do you about the subject?

Maybe Danzig can interview them and post it on the net.

Why don't you e-mail, or call them?

I did, and I got plenty of responses. Some aligned with what I think, some didn't.

I may just do that. Last time I spoke with my delegate, he tried to explain to me why I was wrong to oppose MOM's congressional redistricting plan. I doubt we will not see eye-to-eye on this issue. Since I'm not sure if MOM has officially presented his gun control proposal yet, I may e-mail my delegate this weekend asking him his general thoughts on the subject.
