And this is the question not being asked. Is this a cultural problem? Are we immersing our kids with violence, sex, and depravity? Are kids coming out of their childhood numb to the REAL effects of violence? Are we, through video games, tv, and movies conditioning our kids to believe that people don’t really die when they get shot?

I’ve seen too many parents working so hard to gain their kid’s approval and trying to be their friends rather than their mentors, discipliners, and leader. Kids have no respect for adults anymore; how in world can we expect them to respect each other.

I’m not sure what else that guy said, but what was missing was who is ultimately responsible here and it’s not our entertainment or gaming industries. It’s the parents not taking full and complete responsibility for their kids. Taking full responsibility for what their kids are viewing on TV and their computers. Afraid to truly discipline them when they screw up. We are now seeing the results what ‘time out’ really accomplishes. We are now reaping the rewards of the ‘Ritalin’ generation. And we are seeing the results of a social climate that has parent raising their kids in fear of being accused of abuse. And, as much as some folks don’t want to hear this, we are seeing the results of a society that has decided their demand to not be offended by morality is more important than trying to instill simple moral disciplines in kids.

But this is now our culture. No responsibility. Blame the gun. Blame someone else. A do not try to raise kids in stable, moral environments. Let them eat all the violence and depravity that they can stomach. Then when things go wrong – as they are – we put our hands in the air and ask “I don’t understand what happened”.

I find your assessment fairly accurate. It is parents who have decided to be friends, who tried to reason with that 2 year old etc. My kids are allowed to play some violent games and watch some violent movies, but my husband and I know which ones and we have our limits on their games. If we don't approve the game goes or doesn't get bought in the first place, even if they are using their own money. My oldest loves COD Black Ops, however, he hates the idea of ever firing a real gun. He loves looking at old guns, has taught himself the history of them, the history of tactical maneuvers and war strategy, but actually is opposed to it all unless in extreme circumstances of imminent danger of invasion. I think the parenting movement of being friends with your child, or reasoning with a 2 year old as to why something they did was bad and hurt someone's feelings is what has done a lot of damage to consequences and the understanding of consequences for behaviour. I am more old school, my kids got spankings, have had to write lines, sometimes still do, and I try to make sure I know what they are up to and with who even in their online games. Which are some of the first things to go if they aren't doing well in school, or screw up.
