| New 'check-out' fees coming? New 'Check-Out' Fees Emerging | WPRI.com (WPRI) - If you prefer to "swipe" at the checkout counter, you may start to notice an additional fee on your receipt. Starting this week, merchants can tack on a charge up to 4% of your purchase. The change comes after a multi-billion dollar settlement between credit card companies and retailers.

| That is the thing.... most banks charge a fee when you use your card as a debit but it is free when you use it as a credit (or so it has been until this article). I've always wondered why they charge a fee for debit purchases but don't charge a fee when you write a check? I would think processing checks would be more costly to the bank than say somebody just using a debit card.

| I've never had any of my banks (3 of them) charge a fee for debit or credit use. Curious to know what bank(s) you've encountered that do this?

Now MD SECU doesn't charge (something they have changed used to be .75 cents per transaction) but sometimes venders can charge a fee and PNC doesn't. I no longer have BoFA or Sun Trust accounts.
