I just had another pleasant experience with the IRS. They sent me a note saying I had underpaid my 1st quarter 941 taxes so pay up and, PS, here are some penalty charges as well. I looked back over my books, saw that the payment had been made and the check had come back as well. So I called them and spoke with a very helpful lady who saw that my payment had been miscredited and got me all fixed up.

This is the 4th or 5th time I've had to contact the IRS because of a mistake on either their part or mine and each time they've been very easy to deal with and helpful.

One time I didn't get the notice that Larry had gone to a different deposit schedule (he had it buried in a pile of desk stuff) so I kept on paying like normal. Finally I get this notice that I wasn't doing it right and they assessed Gude Brothers several thousand dollars in penalties. I made a quick phone call and told the IRS lady what happened. She wiped out the penalties right then and there.

So that makes me think that all the people who report these horror stories of getting their homes confiscated or thrown in jail probably deserved it.

I've been preparing taxes since 1989, so 15 years now. I had one client who had not even filed a return in 6 years and they never notified him at all. He made no less than 55K a year during those 6 years. He wanted to get it taken care of and once we sent his returns in, they were all over him like flies on poop. I warned him that it was going to send all kinds of flags flying, and in my letter to the IRS I asked for penalties and fines to be waived or reduced. Amnesty my foot, and he paid in full.

Yep, the IRS as with the comptroller’s office is on top of things all right. Just think of all the earned income credits and bogus filing statuses, not to mention their lack of ability to find income earners who haven’t filed taxes in years.

You know, most people panic when they get a notice from the IRS, and most of the time, if not all the time, it can be worked out with a simple phone call.

That or their case was handled by a "tagged" agent.
