What I wanna know is... how'd he lose the house and most of his life savings when he caught her in the act of bangin' the neighbor.

He must have had a sh!tty lawyer... Surely he had some evidence to prove she was cheating... the sheets, maybe? The bullet that he shot the neighbor in the ass with?

Sleuth, dear niave Sleuth, divorce in this country is not the big trail of fairness you see on TV. Most states court systems don't give a flip who did what, with who or how many times. Divorce is a formula, plug in assets, debt and kids and out pops a tidy judgemement. Hell in many states adultery isn't even a grounds for divorce. When I got divorced in Maine there were 2 grounds you could file under, irreconsilable differences and financial responsibility. You could have video tape of her doing a street gang on a picnic table behind an elementary school and it would not matter, she gets half. If it is a house with no equity, it gets sold and whatever money is left after the lawyers suck off their part is split as well.
You could have Perry Mason and it would not change a thing.

I always thought that adultery was ALWAYS a ground for divorce, but the reason most people didn't use it was because they had no proof. I thought if you could prove adultery, the courts would generally throw the book at her...

Most states do not place penalties because of sex between two consenting adults. Once considered immoral, today it is merely an addendum under "irreconcilable differences". The state does not legislate sex between adults.

Take it from those that know. Adultery in the state of Md is a whole $10 fine. It will, however, get you an imediate divorce and custody of the children. In Md you have to wait a year for a divorce when children are involved. Marital property is 50/50 no matter what the case.
