How about 'right to fair and speedy trial'

...for one?

As a new republican you were suppossed to say 'it takes so long because it takes awhile for a lawyer, getting paid tons of money, to get guilty people off the hook."

Civic duty? Try 'profiling'. I do not know of a white male, married with children, 30 plus years of age, Republican, pro death penalty that has gotten to perform their civic duty. Every one I know either never got sat or was excused (excluded) by defense when they did get a case.

I even had one guy ask me how to get tossed. He wanted to serve but could not afford to serve on a lengthy trial. I told him 'show up'. He got a case and made it as far as 'white, male, married, father of 5'...BZZZT. 'Thanks for playing but no thanks!'

I was a single dad last time my name came up and could not spare the time. I'd LOVE to get a case now.

A question I have is this:

They are reporting that this new juror has not been privy to any information about the trial, and has to be brought "up to speed" concerning the evidence that has been submitted in this case.

Just who brings the new juror up to speed?

Is it the Jury Foreman? Is it the judge?

Who ensures that all the evidence is presented to the new juror in the same manner as it was in the courtroom, with or without objections/overrulings, etc.?

I'm one of the few who think that Scott Peterson didn't do it. I'm really interested in this purging of the jury members.

Wow! I thought these proceedings were messed up before yesterday!

Well now, with what's gone on in the last 48 hours, things have really gone haywire in this trial.

They've had to bring an 2 new alternate jurors, select a new jury foreman, and then bring the new jurors "up to speed" on the case, in order to resume deliberation, and then try to reach a verdict.

So, this trial has been going on for some 5 & 1/2 months so far, makes you wonder about the mindset of those jurors who've been listening/considerating/deliberating this case all that time.

"When can I go home??

As I understand it, they are only brought up to speed on the deliberations; the alternates had to sit through the trial just like the jurors that were selected. The alternates are there just for this purpose. The jury can go home when they bring in a verdict.

I was wondering about information on alternate jurors, so I did an internet search and found this:

http://158.59.15.115/arlington/jury.html

What are alternate jurors?

Sometimes, when the judge believes that a case is likely to last for more than a day or two, additional jurors will be chosen from those summoned for jury duty questioned, and challenged like other prospective jurors. The additional jurors are chosen to avoid having to retry the case should one or more jurors be excused from the jury during the trial for an emergency (such as illness), leaving too few jurors to decide the case. Throughout the trial, all jurors will sit together, paying careful attention to all the evidence. After closing argument, and before the jury retires to the jury room to decide the case, the judge will excuse from further jury duty enough jurors to reduce the number of jurors to the statutory number needed to decide the case.
