Great - looks like I'll have to find some people some new jobs this week.

Do you have a clue in life what the cause was?

I worked at that place when it was Po Folks. Yeah, nothing like dating myself.

A fire which began just before daybreak ended business for the Great American Steak & Buffet, a popular local steak house which featured down home cooking. Maryland State Deputy Fire Marshal W. Faron Taylor reports that commuters on the busy Rt. 301 spotted the fire about 5:30 am and arriving firefighters found heavy smoke in the one-story building located just south of the Rt. 301 / Rt. 5 intersection.

"Heavy cranes are being used at this time to assist investigators in determining the origin of the fire," said Taylor. "We think this began in the ceiling which would point towards a grease fire, but there is no way to determine a cause until the investigation is complete."

Firefighters from all over Charles County rushed to the scene to assist Waldorf VFD and firefighters from three stations in St. Mary's County were used to fill in stations in Charles which were emptied out by the multi-alarm fire. In all, over 100 firefighters were on the scene and able to bring the fire under control in about thirty minutes. Damage was set at $1.5 million.

The Great American Steak & Buffet has been open about 8 years on the site of a former Po Boys and enjoyed an extensive clientele who packed the place every day.

Leave it to the St. Mary's Today to get the name of what it was previously wrong.

I've driven by it now the past two days. It's still in tact, the doors and windows are boarded up and part of the ceiling is gone. Not sure what the damage looks like inside, though. It's still standing and I'm sure they'll have it back together and open for business shortly.

I actually tried to get a picture of it yesterday, but I was driving by too fast.
