| New Subdivisions Ban Sex Offenders From Moving In A new subdivision planned in Kansas will look and feel just like any other development in the fast-growing area. But there's one big difference: Registered sex offenders won't be allowed to live in the new development in Lenexa, Kan. The development will be off of K-10 highway and and Woodland Road in Johnson County, Kan. ![]()

This is an interesting idea, but I wonder if it isn't being done largely for PR to buy their homes. (Which, by the way, have been selling pretty quickly.) As great as ideas like this initially sound, you still have to think realistically. Will everyone have to undergo a background check, including passersby? What if your mail carrier is a sex offender? The washing machine repair guy? Or a roaming loner comes into town (e.g., Joseph Duncan)? Moreover, does "the community" envelope the local school and playgrounds -- where, probably, most kids are assaulted/abducted? Moving into a neighborhood such as this may help add another layer of comfort, but it should not grant a parent complacency. Parents should remain as vigilant as ever.

| While it sounds like a great idea you have to wonder how well it would work. As mentioned previously the neighborhood is "safe" but what about the public areas. Unless the development has their own schools, shopping area, etc.

| As perfect as it sounds I don't see it being as safe as people will believe it to be. Sure you'll keep the registered offenders out but there's even more out there who haven't even been caught yet! I hope it dosen't set a false sense of security among the parents in those hoods.

Less people to worry about! I'm sure there is also a really good community watch program going on too.
