Follow-up on an old debate with Qurious

Racial controversy in a Texas town

March 28: The Chicago Tribune's Howard Witt talks to MSNBC-TV's Amy Robach about the racial tension in Paris, Texas, caused by the sentencing of a black teen to prison.
Just as I suspected, she had a history of behavioral problems in the school and mommy always showed up to the school and cried "racism!"

I watched the interview with the Chicago Tribune's Howard Witt in full and he discussed how Shaquanda was treated unfairly by the school. He mentioned how she was punished for pouring too much paint in a cup and wearing skirts that were too short. I noticed how Mr. Witt CHERRY PICKED evidence and what he wanted to say. Mr. Witt should lose his job, he's not being fair or objective. He's not presenting every avaliable fact that he has, instead he's holding facts back to fuel the story and get more fame. The Chicago Tribune should fire Mr. Witt for his "reporting."

Andy, I listened to that twice. I'm not following you. It looks like the girl was treated unfairly across the board. It looks like she might be a bit of a problem child, but hardly a major trouble maker.

Mr. Witt only listed those two incidents in the school because it fits his agenda. Welcome to the wonderful world of journalism. He has an agenda, it's to spin this story as black girl treated unfairly by racist town.

I think the sentence was harsh, it should've been a year or two. I think she should do time and should be made as an example.

As far as the school goes and as this "plea deal" goes, I'm sure he's missing some facts, to say it nicely.

Regardless, you don't give a kid 7 years in juvvie for minor behavior problems. This judge should be kicked off the bench.

I don't think the whole town is racist - that is just ridiculous - but the judge's sentencing surely raises some eyebrows and makes you wonder just why he imposed such a harsh penalty.

The school board is also racist, as is the juvy facility.

I said she was unfairly sentenced, she should spend some time in juvy, but not 7 years.

Mr. Witt also said the school board pushed for a harsh sentence, citing a long list of behavioral problems. I'm sure she was in trouble for more than spilling paint.

Please provide links to article/s that indicate she had a behavior problem, and what the other incidents were. If you can't, then she was treated unfairly.

Andy, tell us about the black girl(s) who tormented you in school. I think we need to get to the root of this issue.
