yeah I was surprise in the 1980s the DAT's were still carrying WW II Era Grease Guns


of course the 1911A1 I carried was the same vintage ..... the slide rocked back and forth and was seriously sloppy

I was lucky to qualify ....

1980(a), we 'found' them in our arms room and the Bradley had no provision for M16s in the turret. The Bradley Commanders were issued grease guns, gunners M1911s.

We'd go to the range to qualify (not many marksmanship badges with sub-machinegun tabs) and people would come out of the woodwork for a chance to shoot one.

East German border guards freaked out first time we went to the border with those strapped to our backs. They thought we had some new high tech weapon they'd never seen before, they were falling over themselves trying to get a picture of us with one.
