Not-too-far campsites

We were talking about taking the DQ camping some time soon. Does anyone have any suggestions for some campgrounds that aren't too terribly far away, but not in SoMD either (maybe a 1-3 hour drive)? I don't want to just pitch a tent in some woods and have to 'hold on to a tree ...' if you know what I mean ... preferably a campground kind of place with restroom facilities, where it's ok to bbq, have a camp fire, etc.

This will be her first time 'roughing it' so I don't wanna scare the beejeezus out of her. It's been an eternity since I camped anywhere (besides Bristol, of course) so I'm not sure what amenities we'd wanna have in terms of scenery, things to do, etc. I'm thinking a nice place to walk, a lake, etc. Sites with websites would be REALLY appreciated!

TIA!

Artillery Ridge Campground in Gettysburg. They also have a battlefield tour on horseback, which is very cool.

We really like Big Meadows on Skyline Dr. Takes about 2 1/2 - 3 hours to get there, but there's lots to do. They have nature programs, scenic hikes, luray caverns isn't too far away, cooter's garage (if it's still open) is close by, Sperryville (antiques and fleemarket) is close by too. We go almost every fall. If you do decide to go, lemme know and I will supply the neccesary equipment.

Thx for the ideas folks ... keep 'em coming.

One question ... any concerns on pets at these places? I'm not sure if we'd take the pups or not but it'd help to know in advance if they are welcome.

The place Huntr's talking about allows leashed pets.

Oops, Bethpage allows pets. It is really nice, they have a huge pool and a lake, bands on the weekend, plenty of paved road for bike riding. Plus, you can drink, get drunk, and not have far to stumble.
