PARK OF THE MONTH: St. Clement’s Island State Park

On March 25, 1634, after an arduous 4-month journey across the wintry Atlantic, a group of English colonists sailed up the Potomac River aboard two small ships, The Ark and The Dove. Landing on a small island they named for St. Clement, the patron saint of mariners, they celebrated a Catholic Mass of thanksgiving, the first in the English-speaking colonies, marking the beginning of the Maryland colony.

Today St. Clement’s Island State Park remains much as it did on that day 370 years ago. The beautiful, 40-acre day use park, accessible only by boat, offers wonderful views across the Potomac, hiking trails, fishing, hunting, picnic facilities and interpretive panels. A small slip provides a pull-up location and boat tours to the island are offered on weekends, March through September.
