I remember when I was little, my mom would lay the smackdown on us at the store in a minute. Nobody cared back then. Now everybody is so worried about everybody elses bussiness.

Recently went out with the daughter who was having melt down and couldn't behave. We're having dinner (8yrs old) and she's pouting at the table, won't talk or look at us. I told her to change the attitude, it's not going to be tolerated. This goes on and on and finally I reached over and smacked her leg. Not hard, just a, "I'm not going to put up with this attitude" reminder. Now she cries, wipes her eyes and is magicly in a better mood. 5mins tops after the "smack". I look over and this older woman is clearly staring me down and pissed off.

By any chance does this "silent treatment" include arms folded across the chest, one leg swinging rapidly that either kicks the chair or table and she isn't eating either?

My mom had the most savage pinch. You rarely saw it coming, and by the time you yelped in startled pain and people were looking she would be staring with a cool composed expression promising further reprisal for embarassing her in public.

I could get away with a lot at home but making her look bad or embarassing her in public was verboten.

This is where you have to worry about all of the CPS calling freaks! Having some kind of control of your child is a good things. These days there are so many parents that let their children do whatever they want.

You got it. Sitting and enjoying the silence as vrai suggested has been used and isn't a solution, it just gets worse. When she does speak during these episodes it's with total disrespect and I'm not going to ignore it any longer. I think the shock of, "OMG-mom didn't just smack me in public", was an eye opener. She was actually very pleasent the rest of the meal and evening.
