Lack of Parent Volunteers

Why is it so hard to find parent volunteers to help with after school functions? There must be atleast 1200 kids that go to Esperanza Middle School and they couldnt get 25 parents to volunteer to help work the Fall Festival this past Friday.

Not me personally but, I think many parents are so involved in work and getting thier kids back and forth from other activities that they just can't/don't find the time. Perhaps as an incentive, the school should offer extra credit to kids if they and thier parents were to sign-up to help/assist with these types of events. Just a thought.

well at Dent's carnival, it was not run well either. When you are scheduled for a certain position/game station you don't get off/waiting for your rotating shift so you can take your own children around to the activites. It leaves a bitter taste in the mouths of the "reliable" volunteers. The new ones need to step up. Maybe get the local high school's early childhood ed department included, get those high school girls involved for the games and have it count towards extra credit on a test or final grade./community service.

As a parent of a middle schooler, I don't want to participate/volunteer with after school functions. We have other things to do on our weekends.

I leave my house at 7:00am and get home around 5:45pm. I have to make dinner, check oldest homework, bathe my 1 year old, make sure my 10 year old has bathed and brushed teeth. I have to get everything ready for the next day. Then I can finally sit down for 30 minutes before I am ready to go to sleep. I do not have time to volunteer.

Work?

If I didn't have to feed my kids and keep a roof over their heads, I would volunteer for all their school functions.

Because bratty children, bureaucratic teachers and power tripping PTA mothers have made it no fun to do these things anymore.

And if you REALLY want to enjoy volunteering on behalf of your child, get involved with their sports programs.

I have to work a full time job and do not get off untill 4:30-5:00ish, so it makes it really hard for me to help with after school activities. It is hard for me to take time off from work since someone needs to cover me while I am away...most folks do not want to stay that late on a Friday evening, so I am stuck there, It stinks, but I am happy to have a job with times so hard right now, I will not complain...
