What's with..

the new grading system at Patuxent Elementary. Youngest brought home his report card today and I was expecting to see O's (outstanding) and G's (good). Now they changed it to M's (mastery), P's (progressing) and E's (emerging). The change must be new for this year because my oldest was at PES last year and it was still O's and G's. Maybe changed just for Kindergarteners???

Regardless, my son did well. Several M's, a lot of P's and some E's. Not bad for his first report card.

What I did find funny is a note that was sent home from his teacher. Having an older son who would occassionally get in trouble (minor stuff only!) at school and son blaming it on others. The typical "it wasn't my fault. so-n-so made me do it" or " i was just trying to tell other to be quiet". Well, the teacher thinks that it really is others influencing my youngest into misbehavior. She also asked me why he hits himself in the head sometimes.

My youngest's biggest concern is that there will be somebody in this world who doesn't like him or wants to be his friend so I wouldn't be surprised if he does misbehave out of fear that he will get left out if he doesn't. Regardless, I've had the talk with him about it being his responsibility to behave himself and if he knows that something is wrong, he should be able to tell the person that he will not act up.

As far as the hitting himself in the head, it's just his response to some of the bone-headed stuff he does and it's not anything bad.

If I had to make an informed guess (having no kindergartners in school anymore), I would say that it is probably to bring the grading system used more in alignment with the MMSR (Maryland Model for School Readiness), details of which can be found at this site Maryland Model For School Readiness ~ School Improvement in Maryland. Basically, it's the state's plan to ensure that all students are ready for school. Using similar terms on the report card just eases the communication.
