Opinions please

If you are babysitting your grandchild, and the grandchild pulls a small tv off the stand (thank God it didn't hit him) and it breaks. Who should be responsible for replacing the tv? Before anyone starts bashing me, I was 6 feet away getting his sippy cup, this happened in 30 seconds.

The parents of the child. Not because 'it's their kids fault', but because they are the homeowners and it was an accident. If they need to, it's covered under homeowners insurance.

Everyone should just be grateful the kid wasn't hurt and forget about the TV.

EDIT: I should say, whomever is the owner of the house/tv, it may not be the parent's house.....

My daughter is watched in our home by her grandmothers and we hold ourselves responsible for everything they break.

Why wouldn't you just replace it yourself? I understand a reaction to blame the parents and demand they pay for it. it is their kid. They are responsible for him.

However, is that the kind of grandparent you want to be? Give them a bill for the cookies he ate? Charge them for the gas you used taking him to the movies? Take a babysitting fee out of their Christmas presents?

Ideally, they will offer to pay, as they should and then you get to be magnanimous and philosophical.

I've got very different types of grandparents in my larger family and I can tell you which ones are most enjoyed and most desired to be around and which ones are thought of as Scrooges with a sort of unpleasant edge about them and get invited to less family stuff.

No. They said 'wrecked a TV'. Not an entire nation.

The home owner is the responsible party for events in the home

This was my thought as well. Man, if Gran had sent a bill to my Mom for everything I'd destroyed in her house, Beej would still be paying it off.

Hmm....this is a good question. On one hand, it's easy to say you should've been watching the child better or had a better baby-proofed area if you're going to babysit. On the other hand, if the kid was older and say, hit a ball through a window, the parents should pay.

Maybe you could split the cost with the parents?
