Destination Imagination

Anybody here have kids in this program? My daughter joined and I was just trying to get some feedback on it. We just finished the first assignment and it seems interesting.

It is a volunary school program. It is what we had when we were in school, but it was called Oddysey (spelling?) of the Mind. The assignment was to write a story and make up a "kids rule" that will be broken in the story (could be anything your kids wants the rule to be) and a DI rule of motion, which are the regular laws of motion, that has to be broken as well. You cannot help AT ALL. You can explain and answer questions about the assignment, but NO IDEAS! Emily's story took place at the mall and the kids rule was that the girls wore their hair down all the time, but this day fictitional "Rachel" wore her hair in braids and "Emma" was devestated! Then they used the law of motion by pushing fictitinal "Jimmy" out of his chair and he hit the floor (law of motion). She wrote hers in the form of a play and it was really good! She has a great imaginatin, so she should do well. They have competitions on imaginative problem solving at county, state and national levels.

My son was in it while he was in elementary school. They have four different categories. Three of them are given their problem at the start of the competition's practices. The fourth is an Improv group that is not given their specific problem until about 30 minutes before the competition. Kind of like "Who's Line Is It Anyway?". He was in the Improv group and absolutely loved it. They compete on the county level first. Depending on how many groups there are if you finish in the top 2 or 3, you then go to the state level which has been held at UMBC and/or Towson. If you finish top 1 or 2 at state you go on to "Nationals" @ Univ of Tennessee. They call them "Nationals" but there are also groups from foreign countries as well. Best my son did was a 3rd at state level in 5th grade. He had a blast nonetheless. Tell your daughter good luck.

Camily, how did your daughter end up doing? My youngest has joined a team and starts next week. How did things go with the program and did she like it?

At her school it went sucky. They quit half way through it. That was three or four years ago though.
