53119 - Hi! My name is ~Kiku! I am a female white tabby patch cat at about 1 1/2 years of age. I am a very lovable girl who just sucks up all your attention. I have a laid back personality and just want someone to love me. I love to explore as well! I am a VERY VERY sweet girl and also like to talk the day away. I still have a bit of kitten left in me so I still love to chase/play with many different toys; especially laser pointers! Overall I am just a nice lap cat looking for home with owners who don?t mind having a little older cat. ~My name is Japanese meaning ?flower? (pronounced Kee-Koo). For more info please contact Colleen Lok at the shelter or at 301-579-6454 or kittyfosters@gmail.com

Kiku is beautiful. But shame on them for not spaying and neutering all of the animals before adoption.

If this is Tri Cty's site, they spay/neuter before adoption. I guess they don't do every single cat/dog as soon as it comes in, because if they don't get adopted, after a while they get PTS, and it'd be a 'waste of money' for lack of better words.

If they were going to fix them then why would they bother wasting their time advertising that they're not fixed?

Some dogs/cats come thru and are already neutered/spayed. If you wanted to adopt one that wasn't, maybe you'd have to wait for the spay/neuter or healing time. That's just my guess...I don't know for sure.

I read on Tri County's info on Petfinder that if the animal you choose to adopt is not spayed/neutered, you will have to pick from their list of vets and they will make the appointment for your animal to be "fixed". They take the animal to the vet of your choice for you, and you pick it up and take it home afterwards. It's included in their adoption fee of $85.

Oh, here it is..

If you are interested in adding a new pet to your household please consider adopting one from the Tri-County Animal Shelter. It is a really easy process. You simply pick out an animal that you want, fill out an application, complete an adoption contract and pick out a veterinarian from the list of those participating in our adoption program. The animal shelter and it's staff take care of the rest. They make the surgery appointment for your new pet and take it to the veterinarian on the day of the appointment. While at the veterinarian your new pet is given a health examination, surgically sterilized and if it is old enough (4 months and older) it receives a rabies vaccination. You just pick up your new pet from the veterinarians' office when all of this is complete. The best news is, you get all of this for a single fee of $85.00.

Our shelter computer program automatically puts if they are spayed/neutered - we just fill in the information in the system and it works it out for us. We fill in the blanks like this -
Name: Tigger
Type: Cat
Breed: Domestic Short Hair
Sex: Female
Spayed? - No
Primary Color: Orange
Secondary Color: White
Age: 2yrs approx.

Then there will be a description box at the bottom and we just double click on it and there you have it - It will say:

"Tigger is an orange and white female Domestic Shorthair mix. She is approximately 2 years old. She has not been spayed."

So we don't really go out of our way to say they are fixed - it's just how the system is set up ^^
