I was with my Mom when she had to put her companion Sandy down. It was terrible, but we all knew we were sparing her more pain. I'm sorry for your loss.

My thoughts will be of you and your dog. They really do become a family member.

We had to put down a horse my husband owned for almost 20 yrs. We knew in our hearts it was time - she was starting to decline rapidly. We were able to plan ahead and had a suitable site for her to be buried and we could still "visit" with her. At least we could prepare everything and not be caught in the middle of the night with a emergency vet call. It was the hardest thing we have ever done. Just thinking about it brings chills. It was the right thing to do for her but she is awfully missed. You won't know how it is going to hit you until you are there at the end but it is the best way to honor your friend. You are right to want to have a poem or something to say to remind yourself of the good days and that it is time to say - "Until we meet again". I wish you courage tomorrow.

Try here http://www.dogheaven.com/about.htm there's plenty of stuff to choose from; or just cruise the site to help ease your pain.

The oldie but goodie "Rainbow Bridge" is a real tearjerker.

Ocean I am so sorry about your dog. I have been in your shoes and I know it must have been a hard decision.

A Dog's Plea

Treat me kindly, my beloved friend, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me learn.

Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear.

Please take me inside when it is cold and wet, for I am a domesticated animal, no longer accustomed to bitter elements. I ask no greater glory than the privelege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for I cannot tell you when I hunger for thirst.

Feed me clean food that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life, should your life ever be in danger.

And, my friend, when I am very old, and I no longer enjoy good health, hearing and sight, do not make heroic efforts to keep me going. I am not having any fun. Please see that my trusting life is taken gently. I shall leave this earth knowing with the last breath I draw that my fate was always safest in your hands.

I came across this after a quick search. I couldn't find the one I was looking for (our vet gave it to us when we put our Dalmatian down a few years ago), but there are a lot of good poems here to read.

I am so sorry about your dog. I had to put my cat down 2 years ago, it was the hardest thing ive ever had to do. It still hurts, but it does get easier to deal with. Take care.

Lady lives on in your memory, and her influence on your life is undeniable; what a blessing she has been to you! She goes to a better place now, and she'll be there waiting for you when you arrive. God bless you for your love of Lady and the strength you've shown in taking care of her.
