This may or may not fit your needs, but this is the next one for my wife and I. Very fast shot to shot recovery time and a super quiet zoom motor.
It gives my wife the simplicity of a point and shoot and me some flexibility with different lens configurations. Two big selling points on this camera for me was the 12x optical zoom and the hot shoe for an external flash. (Hafta thank Rack'm and jbr for their advice on that.)

I might get a tripod - someone said the Canon 720 would be just fine with a tripod - indoor photos of an old house.

A tripod is essential, IMO. And if you're shooting in low light, getting a good shot is next to impossible without one.
